oak you
pangea pt. 3 (hibernation) … coming soon!
pangea pt. 3 (hibernation), the third installation in a five-part series by electronica duo oak you, explores multiple realities while following a single protagonist as she continually insulates and isolates herself in mysterious cocoon-like swaddling, only to continually re-emerge into diverse and divergent dimensions. Meanwhile, a multidimensional onlooker narrates through song. Starring Ali Berry, edited by Liyan Zhao and filmed by Ryan Reeve.
Combining nostalgic assemblages of traditional Irish melodies with lively, textured, polyrhythmic beats, oak you's folk-inspired electronica was birthed from the creative marriage of Cole Quamme and Liam O'Brien. The two met in 2011 while Quamme's touring band, The Fatty Acids, crashed on O'Brien's couch in Portland, OR. In 2016, Quamme cornered O'Brien after a Holy Sheboygan show at High Dive in Milwaukee, WI to propose the collaboration.
In 2019, the duo released their first EP, "Paradice 1 EP," pulling in a talented cast of Milwaukee-based contributors including Caley Conway, Treccy MT, Mike Noyce, D'Amato, Dana Smith, Josh Evert, Derek DeVinney, John Larkin, and Alexander Scott, among others.
By 2021, Caley Conway and Barry Clark (Field Report, CBT) had become mainstays of the group, seeing them through the tracking of a five EP series titled "pangea." Quamme and O'Brien moved to a vegetable farm near Wisconsin's Northern Kettle Moraines, and continued work on the project in their small basement studio and releasing parts 1 and 2 in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Videos for each were inspired by the land around them and the video for "pt. 2 (successors)" featured the choreography of Monica Endres.
